- Alpacas are members of the camel family.
- Alpacas are originally from South American countries Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, Chile, and Argentina.
- There are four members of the Camel Family in South America. The Vicuna and Guanaco which are wild, and the Llama and Alpaca which are domesticated.
- Alpacas are raised primarily for their fleece / fiber.
- There are two types of Alpacas distinguished by their fleece, Huacayas ( Which is all that Fluff Top Farm raises at the moment ) and the other type are Suris.
- Huacaya alpacas have fiber that has a zig zag pattern and sticks out from their body.
- Suri alpacas have fiber that is straight and hangs in locks off their body.
- With proper care and shelter, alpacas are raised from Florida to Quebec and from Alaska to Maryland.
- Alpacas primarily eat grass or hay, however they love hand held snacks from visitors like apples, carrots, sometimes brussel sprouts, green beans and BANANAS!
-Alpacas cannot live by themselves, they need at least one buddy - preferably more.
-Compared to other livestock, alpacas are easy to take care of and provide for.
- Alpacas generally live around 15 to 20 years.
- Alpaca babies are called Crias.
- Alpaca pregnancies last approximately 330 to 365 days and it is rare for them to give birth to more than one cria at a time.
These sessions are open for the person or groups that are coming out and wanting to gain that experience with the alpacas in their environment. The goal is for you to come with what ever fuels your creativity or simply how you wish to relax and be completely immersed in the alpacas pasture to gain perspective and build bonds with them as a heard or individually. Many people in the past sessions have found it easy to bring their own chairs, blankets, yoga mat etc. to sit peacefully to start out the session and allow the alpacas to figure you out and come introduce themselves. It is then very easy to go about yourself in reading, knitting, listening to music, have a light snack, drawing, meditating, taking a nap and much more. The pasture is your playground in your session! Feel free to inquire with any questions or requests that you think may be extreme or not allowed while booking your session and we will gladly help accommodate to your desires.
